Original announcement about the seminar on the EGU ESPST connects page.

Science talk by Eliisa Lotsari will be organized on the 16th of April, 2026.

(Seminar at 18:00 Finland, 08:00 San Francisco, 11:00 New York, 17:00 Berlin, 23:00 Beijing. In the event of confusion, Pacific Standard/Daylight Time holds.)

More than half of Earth’s rivers are covered by ice during the winters. Climate change affects seasonal river discharges and river ice regimes, and river ice cover will continue to decline.

The climate change impacts are the fastest within the polar region, where the river functions depend on the seasonal hydrology and the length of the ice-covered period. Rivers within this region, e.g., in Finland, Sweden, and Norway, are crucial study sites for understanding the environmental changes on fluvial systems and enhancing their adaptation. Critical knowledge gaps remain related to river ice, flow characteristics, and sediment transport interactions. Thus, the overall aim is to create new space-time theories of the interacting river ice, flow characteristics, and sediment transport under changing environmental conditions in the boreal-polar region, via measuring, experimenting, and modelling them. The latest results and ongoing work are presented.

Dr. Eliisa Lotsari is a fluvial geomorphologist and physical geographer at Aalto University, specializing in seasonally ice-covered rivers, their monitoring, and modelling. As an Assistant Professor in Water Engineering, her research integrates hydraulic engineering, fluvial geomorphology, and hydrogeography. She leads the FluvialDynamics research team and is the PI of multiple projects, with strong connections to the Digital Waters Flagship.

Smarter Short-Term Hydropower Regulation: Coupling Hydrology and Energy Modeling with AI Forecasting

Sajjad Mohammadzadeh Vatanchi, University of Oulu, Sajjad.MohammadzadehVatanchi@oulu.fi Short-term hydropower regulation is at the heart of balancing renewable energy supply and demand in today’s dynamic power systems. But with increasing climate variability and pressure for clean energy, traditional methods are no longer enough. My research examines how coupling hydrological and energy
